Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie sat down with her close friend and colleague Hoda Kotb to give her first interview since her mom Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance and believed abduction on February 1.
The full interview will air in two parts, with the first half airing on Thursday, March 26, and the second part on Friday, March 27. However, a brief excerpt from the interview was released on Wednesday.
Since Nancy, who is 84-years-old, disappeared from her Arizona home, Savannah has remained primarily in Arizona with family to help in the search. Kotb, who previously retired from Today, has returned to the show to fill in for her during this time.
In the interview, both Savannah and Kotb appear visibly emotional as Savannah describes the unimaginable pain she and her family have been in every day since her mother’s disappearance. She also continued to urge anyone who has information about Nancy’s whereabouts to come forward.
“Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony. We are in agony. It is unbearable… and to think of what she went through. I wake up every night, in the middle of the night, every night, and in the darkness I imagine her terror, and it is unthinkable. But those thoughts demand to be thought,” Savannah told Kotb.
Throughout her mother’s disappearance, Savannah has remained active on social media, providing updates when available and desperately pleading for prayers.
“I will not hide my face. But she needs to come home now,” Savannah went on.
While discussing the interview with her Today colleagues on Wednesday, Kotb explained what the public can expect from the full conversation she had with Savannah.
“There is a desperation and a steeliness about Savannah. I mean, she is hoping that somebody, whoever this person is, will see something and say something. And as you’ll see in the coming days, she talks about so many things, she talks about the investigation, she talks about her faith, and she talks about how she’s getting through,” Kotb explained.
