A 76-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly shooting her neighbor in the face with a flare gun.
According to People, the incident happened at the pair’s Long Island retirement community on Monday (September 8), with video showing Kathleen Schuman opening fire on Richard Catrone. In the clip, after Schuman fires the flare gun, Catrone is seen charging at her and yelling, "Fucking idiot. What is wrong with you?" as the two fall to the ground.
According to court documents, Schuman is now facing one count of second-degree assault causing injury with a weapon (an incendiary device).
Catrone reportedly received six stitches in his cheek, and Schuman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital.
"My next inclination was to get the gun, and I knocked it out of her hand and she went to get it, and I wanted to protect my dog. I wanted to protect myself," Catrone told NBC 4 New York.
"Kathleen showed no emotion," he added. "She claimed I was the devil, that I tried to murder her. She said, 'I’m sorry I missed, sorry I missed.'"
Neighbors told NBC that he and Schuman had a longstanding beef involving their pets. Catrone apparently began "harassing" Schuman because he said her cat would upset his dog, neighbor Mary Neitzel told the outlet. Their feud escalated when Catrone asked Schuman to keep her cat inside.
On Tuesday (September 9), during her arraignment, Schuman pleaded not guilty. A judge ordered her to stay away from Catrone and set her bail for $5,000 cash. Her next hearing is scheduled for September 12.
