Another tragic incident involving Carnival Cruise Line is drawing attention after a passenger died in the Bahamas when her mobility scooter reportedly went off a pier while the Carnival Celebration was docked at the company’s private destination, Celebration Key.
According to WFLA, the incident happened on May 9 while the ship was in port during a Caribbean sailing that departed from Miami earlier that week. Officials said the female passenger drove off the pier and into the water below. Crew members responded immediately and retrieved her from the ocean, but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
In a statement, the company confirmed the details of the incident and said local authorities in the Bahamas took over the investigation afterward. “Carnival confirmed that a female guest using a mobility scooter drove off the pier at Celebration Key and fell into the water while Carnival Celebration was in port on May 9,” the cruise line said.
The statement continued: “Carnival teams responded, successfully retrieving her from the water. Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive. The deceased was taken by the Royal Bahamian Police Department and the coroner’s office. Our thoughts are with her family.”
A passenger who witnessed the aftermath told WFLA that the woman may have experienced a medical emergency before the scooter went over the edge, though authorities have not officially confirmed that account. The passenger’s identity has not been publicly released.
The Carnival Celebration is one of the company’s largest ships and has become a centerpiece of Carnival Cruise Line’s Caribbean operations since launching in 2022. Celebration Key, located in the Bahamas, is part of Carnival’s broader push into private resort-style destinations aimed at competing with other major cruise brands expanding their own exclusive island experiences.
The latest tragedy comes during a turbulent stretch of headlines for Carnival Cruise Line. Recently, a woman died aboard the Carnival Firenze after falling from a balcony near Catalina Island, California.
