Man Who Leapt and Attacked Judge Sentenced to at Least 26 Years

Deobra Redden, 31, will spend a minimum of 26 years behind bars for lunging at a Las Vegas judge.

Deobra Redden, 31, was sentenced on Tuesday for attacking a judge who was delivering his sentence for an attempted battery charge earlier this year in Las Vegas.

Redden was sentenced by District Court Judge Susan Johnson to minimum 26 years and maximum 65 years in prison with credit for time served, KTNV reports.

He faced seven charges in connection with his January attack on Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus. A video of the incident that went viral at the time showed Redden lunging toward Holthus and landing on her as court officials immediately tried to intervene.

Redden pleaded guilty to six of the charges but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to an attempted murder charge.

At the sentencing, he addressed the court and stressed that he was "not a bad guy, not an evil person." His attorneys argued that he should serve time for the charges concurrently with those for the attempted battery case, the sentence of which led to him attempting to assault Holthus.

Despite the viral attack, he returned to court less than a week after he leaped at Holthus and faced her again. Redden was reportedly previously diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. At one point, he was facing as many as 13 charges for attacking Holthus, who hit her head but said she was OK after the incident.

Prior to his viral moment, Redden had many troubles with the law, including charges of battery on a protected person, robberies, and attempted home invasion.
