Fans have been patiently waiting for a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada ever since the film premiered in 2006. When the trailer for the second film dropped on February 1, audiences couldn’t wait to see the return of their favorite editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestley, after a 20-year hiatus.
The first film highlights the glamorous albeit toxic side of the high fashion world, including the obsession with thinness and body image within these circles. While some fans have since been quick to criticize the movie for it's portrayal of diet culture, others think it’s an accurate depiction of the runway’s nearly impossible standards, especially in the early 2000s.
But it looks like The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be stepping away from this subplot, at least when it comes to the sequel film’s depiction of its runway models.
Meryl Streep Reveals Anne Hathaway’s Request for Producers in Sequel Film
According to Streep in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she and Hathaway were thrown off by the “dangerously thin” models who walked the runway during a show in Milan during Fashion Week. Streep and Hathaway quickly agreed this was not something they wanted to endorse in their follow up film.
Streep explained further in the interview, saying, “I was struck by how not only beautiful and young — everyone seems young to me — but alarmingly thin the models were.” The Mamma Mia! star continued, saying, “I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Annie clocked it too, and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She’s a stand-up girl.”
