Key Takeaways

  • Ahead of Game 3 of the 1996 World Series, Spike Lee asked New Era for a bright red New York Yankees 59FIFTY fitted to match his Starter jacket, breaking MLB’s strict team-color rules and turning the on-field cap into a lifestyle piece.
  • His red Yankees cap opened the door for non-traditional colorways and heavily customized fitteds, paving the way for designers and collaborators of today like Jae Tips, Frosty Preme, Hat Club, MyFitteds, Chase B, and Sauce Pan Dan to push fitted hats even deeper into streetwear culture.
  • For the 30th anniversary, New Era is re-releasing Spike Lee’s red Yankees fitted with new details and bringing back six other Spike Lee Yankees collabs. Current Yankees players like Jazz Chisholm Jr. even wore the red cap to the May 6, 2026 game in the Bronx to honor its legacy.

The New Era 59FIFTY fitted baseball cap first debuted in 1954. But it wouldn’t be until 42 years later, when a film director from Brooklyn decided he needed a color that had never been produced before, that the fitted cap truly became an essential piece of any stylish wardrobe.

Ahead of Game 3 of the 1996 World Series, Spike Lee needed a red Yankees hat to match his new black and red Starter coat. So, he called up New Era CEO Chris Koch to try and make it happen. With then-Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s approval, New Era got it done. The rest is history.

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, we look back at Spike Lee’s custom red Yankees hat, its lasting impact on streetwear culture, and how it revolutionized custom fitted hats.

Spike Lee’s Request

As the story goes, Spike Lee needed a hat to match his red Yankees Starter jacket. So, he put in a special request with New Era CEO Chris Koch for something that you couldn’t just go to the store and buy. He didn’t want a blue Yankees cap like the one Derek Jeter was wearing on the diamond. He needed a scarlet red one. Keep in mind, no MLB caps were produced in anything besides the official team colors at the time. Spike’s request even had to get approved by the the Yankees, an organization that is typically very serious about its traditions (they don’t even let their players have facial hair to this day), and the MLB. Miraculously, it was approved. Spike got his red Yanks fitted for Game 3 of the ‘96 World Series.

Once Lee wore it to the game, the demand skyrocketed. Fashionable Yankees fans across the five boroughs were inquiring about how to get one for themselves. And so it began. New Era began to produce lifestyle caps for teams across the league in their non-traditional colors.

Spike Lee x New Era

The Spike Lee x New Era relationship didn’t end in ‘96. Quite the opposite. In the decades since, the two parties have worked on various iterations of the Yankees cap. Some have been done up in Knicks colors for Spike to rock courtside in Madison Square Garden. Some have celebrated the Yankees and their historic 27 World Series championships. When Spike hits the ballpark, you can expect to always see one on his head. He even wore a special version to capture the championship parade in 2009.

The Lasting Impact of Spike Lee’s Red Yankees Cap

Without Spike Lee’s bold request in ‘96, we may have ever gotten to the point we are at now where thousands of fitted caps are customized in increasingly creative executions every single year. We would have never gotten Jae Tips’ Savior fitteds in every flavor, Frosty Preme’s iconic pink bottoms, all of the thematic packs from shops like Hat Club and MyFitteds, Chase B’s insane “What The” collection, or the new school customizers like Sauce Pan Dan who are flipping fitteds with luxury materials. Fitted hats are an essential piece of streetwear and street fashion that have been embraced far beyond the baseball diamond. And it all started with a red Yankees cap.

Celebrating 30 Years of Spike Lee and New Era

To mark the 30th anniversary of Spike Lee’s red Yankees cap, New Era is re-releasing a limited edition version of the hat on May 9. This 2026 version even featured new details like Spike Lee’s signature embroidered on the grey under visor and a commemorative side patch. Along with the red colorway, six other Spike Lee joints that have been released over the years are hitting stores one more time. Each celebrates the Yankees 27 championships with different all-over patchwork like pennants, bats, and baseball gloves.

As part of the celebration, Yankees players like Jazz Chisholm Jr. even showed up for their May 6 game in the Bronx rocking Spike’s famous red cap. Its legacy lives on.
