Spy Swag: How James Bond Has Influenced the World of Style

When it comes to the topic of style icons, there is arguably no other man who has set the bar as high as James Bond. For over half a century, this fictional secret agent has proved to men of all ages that a guy can rock impeccable clothing and still be a bona fide badass.

Whether he was caught up in epic fights, wild shootouts, or insane car chases, Bond was always dressed to the nines; however, his refined sense of style was far from pretentious—he never looked as though he was trying too hard or was vanity-obsessed. He just looked flat out cool.

Sure, there were a few nuances over the years, but every Bond possessed a rugged, sophisticated style that influenced the way so many men approached dressing. Bond taught us it isn’t about trends or exceedingly flashy garments. It’s about timeless pieces that are well made, practical, and, above all, effortless.

Today, as we approach the release of the 24th Bond film, Spectre, we’re glad to see the character hasn’t abandoned that signature look. In fact, many argue Daniel Craig is the best-dressed Bond of them all—donning clothes that are sharp and contemporary, but still adhere to the original blueprint.

Just look at the first movie poster for Spectre, which features a gun-wielding Craig in a dark gray turtleneck by N.Peal.

An impressive timepiece has always been a must for 007. The watches he’s worn are sophisticated, masculine, and, most importantly, built to last. The Omega Seamaster is Bond’s current watch of choice. In the upcoming Spectre film, there are two distinct designs worn by Bond: You have the limited edition Seamaster 300 with a rugged, striped Nato strap, as well as the more refined Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M, inspired by the Bond family coat of arms.

One of the biggest style cues men can take from Bond is to always remember the importance of practicality. We can’t really talk about Bond’s wardrobe without mentioning the badass sunglasses he’s worn. Every Bond had a signature style as well as a favorite brand; but the sharpest, and most luxe, arsenal of eyewear definitely belongs to the current 007.

In Spectre, the secret agent will wear a pair of Snowdon FT0237 sunglasses—a wayfarer-inspired frame created by the American designer. This style is right in line with the Ford aviator model worn in Skyfall, both of which highlight the power of classic shades.

Bond’s style has become synonymous with refined suits, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he has an aversion to casual clothing. In fact, recent films have shown the secret agent in everything, from Levi’s twill trousers, to Ted Baker khakis, Sunspel polos, and T-shirts. Bond will continue to sport “off-duty” pieces in Spectre, as he will reportedly wear Rag & Bone selvedge denim and new versions of Sunspel’s Riveria polo. It’s just another reminder that a man can look just as good in a pair of jeans as he does in a Savile Row suit—as long as the quality and fit are on point.
