Marc Jacobs ignited controversy earlier this week when he styled models in his runway show at New York Fashion Week with pastel-colored dreadlocks from Etsy. Following the show, criticism of the look erupted online.
"And all who cry 'cultural appropriation' or whatever nonsense about any race of skin color wearing their hair in a particular style or manner—funny how you don’t criticize women of color for straightening their hair," Jacobs responded on Instagram in a screenshot grabbed by The Shade Room.
The designer went on to call those offended by the fashion display "narrow minded." "I respect and am inspired by people and how they look," he wrote. "I don’t see color or race—I see people. I'm sorry to read that so many people are so narrow minded...Love is the answer. Appreciation of all and inspiration from anywhere is a beautiful thing. Think about it."
Famous models like Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Adriana Lima, Irina Shayk, Jourdan Dunn, and Karlie Kloss all walked the runway show sporting the look. You can read Jacobs' response below.
