Roc Nation and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) awarded a prestigious honor to a future notable in fashion design.

On Wednesday (April 22) FIT announced that undergraduate student Beatrice (Xuan) Mak placed first in the institute’s inaugural design competition, powered by Roc Nation. Mak will receive a $20,000 grant, and one of Mak’s designs will go to retail later this year.

The five finalists of the competition presented their individual collections of hoodies, sweatshirts, pants, hats, and accessories on models before attendees at the Roc Nation headquarters in New York City. Pieces were also showcased in the designers’ lookbooks.

“The talent showcased through this competition exceeded every expectation and was truly inspiring,” said Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez. “From concept to execution, these designers demonstrated not only technical excellence, but a strong sense of perspective. These young designers reflect the future of fashion.”

Mak took home the grand prize, while Jiwon Park placed second and received a $5,000 grant and Zion Burrell placed second and took home a $3,000 grant. Outstanding finalists Roy Luo and Nicole Willette were also acknowledged.

"This is the magic of FIT in NYC—uniting the powerhouse energy of Roc Nation with the exceptional creativity and technical skills of our amazing students,” said FIT President Jason S. Schupbach.
