The Met Gala is one of the most exclusive "high fashion" events. Hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (with help from Vogue editor and fashion icon Anna Wintour), the annual event is one of the fashion world's biggest nights out. While the event's purpose is that a fundraiser that ties into the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit, it's also become a red carpet spectacle in its own right, as celebrities do their best (and try really, really hard) to match that year's theme.
With 2015's theme officially set as "China: Through the Looking Glass," it already raised some questions about the problematic nature of turning a country into a theme. People assumed that there would be more than a few missteps as celebrities attempted to tastefully balance the exhibit's theme without looking objectively racist. It's not all tragedy though, some celebs came through and brought their best to this year's Met Gala. These are the Style Wins and Fails at the 2015 Met Gala.
Win: Larry David
Just because you're the real-life version of Seinfeld's George Constanza, doesn't mean you can't clean up.
Fail: Kris Jenner
Kris Jenner nails the '70s “Asian-ploitation” villain look.
Win: Usher
Wow, who knew Usher could make canes look so lit?
Fail: Emma Roberts
Though this look may not have made the red carpet, Emma Roberts' chopsticks-in-hair look is the exact thing we feared we'd be seeing on celebrities.
Win: Grace Coddington
The GOAT Grace Coddington actually had a flight to catch post-red carpet, so she took up Anna Wintour's suggestions of wearing PJs to the Met Gala. But man, she did it in an amazing way.
Fail: Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber looks like the big bad from a Rush Hour movie or the final boss in Double Dragon that you and your friends could never fucking beat. Neither is a good thing to look like. Also Sisqo called. He wants to meet Olivier Rousteing. No idea why.
Win: Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs
We imagine this sums up their relationship perfectly.
Fail: Tabitha Simmons
Princess Amidala and the Statue of Liberty walk into a bar…
Win: Solange
Leave the Giles statement pieces to Solange.
Fail: Lady Gaga
Well, we thought we could go the night without seeing one dress that took the theme and ran with it way too far. We were wrong.
Win: Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne
It's not your traditional tuxes, but we can't say we hate these robed up renditions.
Fail: Chloe Sevigny
Yes your dress has an “Asian” print. No that does not excuse this silk smorgasbord of a dress.
Win: Common
Common keeps it classic. Now say that five times fast.
Fail: Dwyane Wade
Man, D-Wade, you gotta EARN those medals. The Heat didn't even make the playoffs this season.
Win: Michael B. Jordan
With a jade green suit, and a pattern that makes you look twice, it's not the loudest thing on the red carpet, but it shouldn't have to be.
Fail: Miley Cyrus
Miley, punk was the Met Gala theme two years ago.
Win: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian
Kanye lets Kim shine in her custom Roberto Cavalli dress. You can't be mad at a low-key Haider Ackermann velvet tux like that though.
Fail: Lewis Hamilton
We think Lewis got lost on the way to his High School's spring formal…
Win: Rihanna
Rihanna shut down the red carpet in this extravagant dress by Chinese designer Guo Pei. It was such a flex that she required a whole #squad to carry the back.
Fail: Sarah Jessica Parker
Holy shit Sarah Jessica Parker's wildly problematic headdress takes the appropriation cake. What's with the Dragon Lady-like makeup and super exaggerated accessories?
Bonus Win: “Mystery Swag Lord” Laurence Xu
We have no idea who this guy is, but he's killing it. He was literally the only dude who dressed to the theme and nailed it.
UPDATE: We've identified our guy! Twitter user @TheMassInvasion pointed us to his identity: Chinese designer Laurence Xu.
BONUS Bonus Win: Beyoncé
Better late than never. Queen Bey arrived fashionably late, probably to debut her fire custom Givenchy 'fit on Instagram. Good things are definitely worth waiting for.
