Market Week in New York— that time when buyers and press get a hands-on look at next season's product to decide what will be stocked in stores and photographed in the pages of magazines—is one of the fashion industry's biggest events. Since we're fans and consumers first and foremost, Market Week also allows us to get pumped up over what's to come from our favorite labels...and to give you a glimpse at the lesser-known names we hope shoot to stardom in the near future.
After scouring the menswear market and tradeshows like Capsule, Liberty Fairs and MAN this week, we've selected the coolest labels and the signature pieces to look for during Fall/Winter 2016. Get ready now, these are The Brands You Need to Know About This Fall.
Sage De Crêt
Seen at: MAN
Key piece: Belted khaki trench coat
Founded in 2001, this label from designer Kimitoshi Chida takes its name from the words “sensible” and “order” in French. With a grounding in both military-influenced design, and the thoughtful detail-oriented style that has defined Japanese fashion, this label embodies both the classic and the unconventional.
Our Legacy
Seen at: MAN
Key piece: Shearling vest
As one of your local cool guy’s favorite labels, Our Legacy is a bastion of Swedish minimalism—without being afraid to turn up the volume from time to time on color, cut, or graphic design. Recently celebrating 10 years in the game, Our Legacy has built its name on wearable garments that guys will reach for decade after decade.
Larose Paris
Seen at: MAN
Key piece: Casentino wool five panel hats
Isaac Larose’s boutique hat label prides itself on “made in France” quality for all of its headgear, specializing in five-panelled caps that have caught the eyes of major retailers like Mr Porter, Opening Ceremony, and Très Bien. Bringing streetwise tailoring to the art of millinery, Larose’s headgear is nothing short of head-turning.
Second/Layer
Seen at: Capsule
Key piece: Fur-trimmed motorcycle jacket
As one of L.A.’s rising stars, there’s plenty of high-key quality packed into the low-key designs of Second/Layer. With everything that you’d expect from a brand out of California, presented in a way that’s refreshingly understated and unexpected, there’s something for every guy in each collection—from the tailored pieces, to the plain white T-shirts.
Baartmans and Siegel
Seen at: Capsule
Key piece: Bomber lined in leopard print fur
With its riffs on ostentatious furs and thoughtful tailoring, the London-based Baartmans and Siegel feels as though someone from decades past hopped in a time machine and found themselves in the present-day. Almost Wes Andersonian, this label creates gear that would make our grandparents proud—while retaining a present-day playfulness that’s pure charm.
Rhude
Seen at: Capsule
Key piece: Damaged denim jacket
With fans in Kendrick Lamar and Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles-based Rhude has proven to more than just a flash in the pan since it gained notoriety in 2012 with its all-over bandana print tee. With a contemporary take on streetwear that could only come out of L.A., the fusion of fabrics, shapes, and layering is familiar, yet thoroughly modern.
The/End
Seen at: Capsule
Key piece: Leather motorcycle jacket
There’s something distinctly “Californian” about The/End. Founded in 2011, the brand seems timeless in a way that’s enigmatic and difficult to describe, fusing skate and subculture with the heritage aesthetic associated with motorcycle jackets, cowboy denims, and military mainstays.
N/A
Seen at: Capsule
Key piece: Panelled colorblock longsleeve
N/A, or Necessary Anywhere, lives up to its name by creating items that compose the very heart of any man’s wardrobe. Working in shades of black and white, N/A’s simplistic approach to design is a major asset when it comes to crafting these classic basics.
Fred Perry x Art Comes First
Seen at: Liberty Fairs
Key piece: Collaboration bomber jackets
Sportswear icons Fred Perry teamed with Sam Lambert and Shaka Maidoh (founders of the sartorial and artistic collective known as Art Comes First) to engineer a collection that places the label’s laurel wreath on some monochromatic gear. Considering that duo behind ACF is known for their sharp suiting and personal style, it’s only natural that they’d dress up Fred Perry’s famous polo shirt, along with two bomber jackets.
You As
Seen at: MAN
Key piece: Navy collared wool jacket
Launching in the Fall/Winter 2016 season, there’s a lot still to come from this burgeoning New York-based label. With an air of mid-century aesthetics that feel ripped from the late 50s and early 60s, You As introduces itself with period staples like striped turtlenecks, lush long sleeve polos, detailed gingham shirting, and straight-leg trousers.
