Those tiny emoji symbols that have become a cultural phenomenon are going from your tiny smartphone screen to the big screen. Sony has secured the rights to make a movie entirely about emojis after out-bidding two other studios, Warner Bros. and Paramount, in a deal worth almost seven figures, Deadline reports.

The project was pitched by Anthony Leondis, who will direct the film. Leondis has previous experience working on animated movies, having directed Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters and a Lilo & Stitch spin off entitled, B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations.

Sony is the same studio that is bringing other digital creations to life. Its movie, Pixels, starring Adam Sandler immersed in a world where video game characters have taken over hits theaters later this week.

With a whole new set of racially diverse emojis, and new icons being announced every day, the movie has a wide spectrum of characters to choose from.
