Supreme's Newest Designer on Scoring a Job at and Designing for the Brand

As any Supreme fans knows, the brand likes to handle its business quietly. Even the cult favorite's founder James Jebbia hardly grants interviews, so it's hardly a surprise that Supreme brought on designer Max Vanderwoude Gross without so much as an announcement. However, i-D got a hold of Gross, who also founded and designs for his own brand Proper Gang, and spoke with him about designing for both Supreme and Proper Gang.

Gross speaks on getting hired at Supreme and his own education in fashion. He was connected with 'Preme through an early supporter of Proper Gang and has had his career aided by a high taste level rather than a formal fashion design degree. "Not being a great technician in a specific craft has forced me over time to develop an eye for, very simply put, what is good and what isn't," he tells i-D. "It has become an instinct."

The latest 'Preme team addition also talks about how his work at two different brand's informs how he designs for both, specifically in terms of graphic use. Additionally, he speaks on the ways the menswear industry has changed since he entered it and how he imbues the inherent New York-ness into both Proper Gang and Supreme.
