NBA free agency is finally starting to wind down, with Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Al Horford, Jimmy Butler, and D'Angelo Russell all changing teams. The player movement was wild and the league is more wide open than it's been in years. As we wrote over the weekend, there's legit eight teams that could win it all next season. And while teams are excited for next season, not every move was a home run or a win.
If every single NBA team only made good moves then no teams would be bad. But the reality is some moves just suck, or look bad later based on things outside of a team's control like injuries. As the Complex Sports team continues our coverage of the free agency madness, we decided to pick out some of the most overrated signings and moves of the summer. Feel free to get mad.
D'Angelo Russell to the Warriors
I get it. I really do. The Warriors didn't want to let Kevin Durant go for nothing. But honestly, I just don't think this is a very good fit for them and they sent Brooklyn a first round pick in the deal. That's insane! Of course, there's a chance that the Warriors move D-Lo later for players that better fit their squad, but that's a risky game to play with the uncertainty of the NBA.
Jimmy Butler to the Heat
Don't hate me, Heat fans, but yeah. I love Jimmy's game and the intensity that he brings but exactly what is Pat Riley's plan here? The Heat are still in cap hell and Jimmy will be 30 in September. Glad he got that max deal, but there's a strong chance this ends poorly in South Beach. Of course, this discussion all changes if Pat ends up trading for Russell Westbrook, but until then, we're marking this one down as overrated.
DeMarcus Cousins to the Lakers
It's hard to call a minimum signing overrated, but maybe I follow too many Lakers fans because I think they're expecting too much from Boogie. His injury history is building up, but I hope that Boogie can really bounce back this season. Maybe playing with Anthony Davis again will be the spark he needs.
Tobias Harris Back With Philly
I really like Tobias' game and happy he got paid, but this feels like a move where the Sixers had no choice. They made a splash trading for Harris at the deadline last year and gave up too many assets to let him and Jimmy Butler walk. It will be interesting to see how long Harris is in Philly or if they try and get a better fitting piece later on.
Enes Kanter to the Celtics
Kanter is not a bad player by any stretch, but I've seen a lot of talk about the Celtics being better with Kemba Walker and Kanter than Kyrie and Horford. That's just insane and not true.
