Michigan University football coach Sherrone Moore was fired on Dec. 10 following an investigation that found “credible evidence” that he was engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

The school released a statement about the firing, saying that “football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately.”

"U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately," the school said in a statement. "Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

"This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” the statement continues.

Moore was also detained by police in Saline, Michigan, and turned over to a second area police department for investigation into potential charges. His mugshot was released on Wednesday.

No public details about the inappropriate relationship that Moore has been alleged to have been involved in are known at this time. According to his University of Michigan profile, the former coach was married to his wife, Kelli, in 2015.

Moore achieved a 9-3 record this season after going 8-5 in his debut season. He had just signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $5.5 million in 2024.

Biff Poggi, who previously filled in for Moore during a suspension earlier this season, will now become the team’s interim coach.

"The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore," said the department in a statement. "Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges."
