Jordan Chiles Might Lose Olympic Medal After Court Ruling Reverted Her Score (UPDATE)

Updated 8/11 9:14 a.m.: Jordan Chiles has been officially stripped of her Olympic bronze medal in the floor finals for gymnastics.

In a statement shared with People today (Aug. 11), the International Olympic Committee confirmed that the medal that Chiles previously accepted will now be reallocated to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu.

"We are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal," the statement reads.

Her teammate Simone Biles recently posted a supportive message to Chiles on her Instagram Story during this difficult time.

"Sending you so much love Jordan," she wrote. "Keep your chin up Olympic champ! We love you!"

It appears Jordan Chiles might lose her bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics after the International Gymnastics Federation put Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu back in third place.

On Aug. 5, Chiles won her first-ever individual Olympic medal in the floor final. Initially, her score from judges earned her fifth place on the scoreboard until her coach Cecile Landi’s quick inquiry about the decision got her bumped up two places.

This led the Romanian Olympic committee to protest the decision to the Court of Arbitration for the Sport who made the decision to reinstate Chiles’ first score. Her 13.666 put her in fifth place again behind two Romanian gymnasts that finished with 13.700.

Prior to the release of the ruling, Chiles posted heartbreak emojis on her Instagram Story. Following the ruling, she announced that she’s distancing herself from social media for awhile.

“I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you,” she wrote.

Elsewhere on social media, family and friends came to her support with their own posts.

Her sister, Jazmin Chiles, chastised the judges about the whole ordeal. “Her bronze was stripped over 4 seconds of time that would have needed to happen if the judges did their job,” she wrote.

Suni Lee, one of Chiles’ teammates, posted on her Instagram Story to also critique the judging that led to the situation. “All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges?? Completely unacceptable. This is awful and I’m gutted for Jordan. … u have all my flowers and you will ALWAYS be an Olympic champion,” she wrote.

Chiles’ mother, Gina Chiles, after seeing the critics of her daughter throughout this situation, called out the naysayers in her own post. “My daughter is a highly decorated Olympian with the biggest heart and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched," she wrote. "And she's being called disgusting things."

Speaking to People, USA gymnastics revealed how disappointed they were with this turn of events.

"We are devastated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling regarding women’s floor exercise,” they wrote. “The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring."

As of now, it is unclear if Chiles will have to return her medal.
