Jaylen Brown Fined $25,000 for Throat Slashing Gesture After Dunk

His contract is worth $304 million. He'll be okay.

Jaylen Brown’s wallet is significantly lighter after receiving a hefty fine for celebrating a wild dunk over Detroit Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart.

With 12 seconds left on the clock during the first quarter of the Celtics and Pistons game earlier this week, Brown slammed down on Stewart with a poster-worthy dunk that sent the TD Garden into a frenzy.

Brown was amped after the dunk — so much so that he decided to throw caution to the wind and mimic a throat being slashed by gesturing his thumb over his throat. If the dunk wasn’t disrespectful enough, Brown had to double down and let Stewart know that he’s not only an elite dunker, he’s also a gravedigger.

The NBA didn’t find Brown’s gesture funny and he was fined $25,000 for his actions. Truth be told, that’s a lot of money to the average person — but not Brown. Last year, he signed a five-year, $304 million deal with the Celtics.

After the game, Brown suggested that he knew that he’d get in trouble behind the gesture, telling a reporter about what happened by saying that he was “just caught up in the moment, I guess.”

“Big play,” he continued. “I think that the NBA and the NBPA are sensitive about the gestures and things like that, so you’ve got to be mindful of that.”

There’ll undoubtedly be many more big slams in Brown’s immediate future that he’ll have to remember not to make a throat-slashing gesture for. This season so far, he’s averaging 25.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
