Elon Musk Is Lobbying to Replace Side Mirrors With Cameras

The technology exists, works, and is reliable, so why not?

The Tesla Model X concept CUV, as well as dozens of other concept cars, was shown without side mirrors. In their stead sat a pair of cameras that offered a wider view angle and much, much better aerodynamics. Camera technology can easily handle this sort of application, but the NHTSA's code won't allow it on a road car.

That's why Elon Musk and Tesla Motors are lobbying for a change to the code. We can get better aero, resulting in higher speeds and better fuel economy, wider fields of vision, and make it easier to check blind spots by putting said cameras in convenient locations in the cabin, and the only thing standing in the way is an outdated law.

It's time to change.
