Australian field hockey player Thomas Craig got himself in trouble while participating in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics by purchasing cocaine.
On Tuesday night, police found Craig purchasing a gram of cocaine from a drug dealer 15 minutes after he attended an event for the Australian field hockey team following their loss to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. Craig was arrested alongside the dealer, who was reportedly carrying 75 ecstasy pills and seven vials of cocaine, according to the Herald Sun.
The Australian Olympic Committee released a statement confirming Craig's arrest and that he wasn't charged with anything. It also announced that the organization is doing everything in its power to assist Craig.
"The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on Aug. 6. No charges have been laid," the committee said in the statement. "The AOC is continuing to make inquiries and arrange support for the Team member."
The Herald Sun also reported that Craig had been released with a warning and wasn't hit with a fine or given a criminal record as a result of the drug deal. Craig released a statement once he was released explaining how "embarrassed" he was by the whole ordeal.
"I'd firstly like to apologize for what has occurred over the past 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions," he said. "My actions are my own and in no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport and the Australian Olympic Committee. I've embarrassed you all and I'm truly sorry."
Craig's Olympic debut came in 2016 when the Summer Games were in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. He helped the team secure a silver medal during the 2021 Tokyo Games.
