The New York Knicks are reportedly nearing a deal to make Mike Brown their next head coach, and the basketball community is talking all about it.
According to a report from ESPN's Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania, the Knicks will be offering Brown the position, with another report from fellow insider Chris Haynes stating negotiations are ongoing as both sides work to finalize the agreement.
The move drew reactions from NBA fans as many felt Brown is the one coach who will be able to get Jalen Brunson, Karl Anthony-Towns, and the rest of the New York Knicks to mesh together, while others believe Brown is no different than former head coach Tom Thibodeau.
This potential hire comes on the heels of a major shake-up at the head coach position as coach Thibodeau was fired in early June following the Knicks' six-game loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
The move surprised many, considering Thibodeau's solid tenure, which included a 226-174 regular-season record over five years and a strong 51-31 campaign in 2024-25 that secured the No. 3 seed in the East. After a wide-ranging coaching search, the Knicks zeroed in on Brown, whose resume includes two NBA Coach of the Year awards (2009 with the Cavaliers and 2023 with the Kings).
The Knicks' path to an NBA Finals appearance is clearer than ever after both the Celtics and Pacers are facing major setbacks next season by losing their key stars, Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton, to Achilles injuries during the 2024-25 NBA Playoffs.
