Luka Dončićis expected to miss the team’s final stretch of games after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring, the Los Angeles Lakers announced Friday.
The injury occurred during Thursday’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and imaging later confirmed the severity. With just five games left before the playoffs, the timing is far from ideal. Los Angeles has surged into the No. 3 spot in the Western Conference, largely behind Dončić’s production, but his absence now introduces uncertainty as the postseason approaches.
Hamstring injuries of this nature can take weeks to fully heal, and this isn’t Dončić’s first issue with the muscle. He previously missed time earlier this season with a similar injury before returning after the All-Star break.
In his first full season with the Lakers, Dončić has been nothing short of dominant. He leads the league in scoring while averaging 33.5 points, along with 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game. His recent stretch has been particularly historic, highlighted by a 13-game run of 30-point performances and multiple explosive scoring nights, including outings of 40-plus and beyond.
That scoring surge carried Los Angeles through one of its strongest runs of the season. The Lakers have won 16 of their last 19 games, with Dončić serving as the engine of the offense, either scoring or assisting on a majority of the team’s points during that span.
Still, despite his statistical dominance, the injury could have ripple effects beyond the standings. Dončić has appeared in 64 games this season, putting him just shy of the NBA’s 65-game minimum required for major postseason awards. That leaves his All-NBA candidacy, and any late push into MVP consideration, in jeopardy.
The Lakers (50-27) remain in control of their playoff positioning, but the margin is thin. Teams like the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves are still within striking distance, meaning Los Angeles will need to hold its ground without its leading scorer.
Head coach JJ Redick revealed that Dončić initially suffered the injury in the first half against Oklahoma City but briefly attempted to play through it before exiting for good.
