LeBron James has made a personal lifestyle change that he and those close to him believe could help extend his legendary NBA career: he stopped drinking alcohol.
According to an article by ESPN's Dave McMenamin, the Lakers superstar gave up drinking during his recent rehab from a sciatica injury, a decision aimed at improving his recovery and overall performance. McMenamin writes that James' commitment to his physical condition this season has been noticeable, with multiple sources noting the significance of the change.
"There's no telling the ride the Lakers could still go on this spring, especially if James can find that cape to put back on," McMenamin wrote, highlighting both James' leadership and his renewed focus on health.
James, now eight years older than in his early championship years, missed the first 14 games of the season due to sciatica. But beyond rehabbing from pain, his decision to abstain from alcohol appears to be part of a broader effort to keep his body in peak condition.
According to sources cited in the article, James has "slimmed down considerably" since giving up drinking, a move he hopes will "take pressure off his back and joints" as he strives to "keep up with the young guys."
LeBron has long been open about his enjoyment of wine and finer experiences off the court. He's also been known for his appreciation of a good glass of wine after big nights. In 2021, he revealed he drinks wine to improve heart health.
"I've heard it's good for the heart," James said. "Listen, I'm playing the best basketball of my life, and I'm drinking some wine pretty much every day. Whatever it is, I'll take it."
