FIFA World Cup: How Far Has an Asian Team Advanced in the Tournament's History?

Tracing South Korea’s 2002 semifinal run, Japan’s steady Round of 16 showings, and other AFC nations that have pushed Asia’s World Cup ceiling.

As the FIFA World Cup has expanded over the decades, nations representing the Asian Football Confederation have transformed from underdogs into teams capable of challenging the sport's traditional powers.

From South Korea's historic run in 2002 to Japan's consistent knockout appearances, Asian teams have steadily elevated the continent's profile on soccer's biggest stage.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, many fans are asking: What's the furthest an Asian team has ever gone?

South Korea set the record in 2002

The deepest World Cup run by an Asian nation belongs to South Korea.

Co-hosting the tournament with Japan in 2002, the Taeguk Warriors made history by becoming the first Asian team to reach the semifinals. Under manager Guus Hiddink, South Korea defeated Portugal in the group stage before eliminating Italy and Spain in the knockout rounds.

Their dream run ended with losses to Germany in the semifinals and Turkey in the third-place match, but their fourth-place finish remains the best result by an Asian nation.

Japan's consistent success

While South Korea owns the deepest run, Japan has been Asia's most consistent World Cup performer.

The Samurai Blue have reached the Round of 16 four times: 2002, 2010, 2018, and 2022. Their most impressive recent performance came in 2022 when the team defeated both Germany and Spain during the group stage before falling to Croatia in a penalty shootout.

Though Japan has yet to reach the quarterfinals, it remains one of Asia's strongest soccer nations.

Australia reached the knockout stage twice

Australia has represented the Asian Football Confederation since 2006 and quickly found success.

The Socceroos advanced to the Round of 16 in their first World Cup as an AFC member in 2006 before losing to eventual champion Italy. Australia matched that achievement in 2022 after emerging from a difficult group featuring France, Denmark, and Tunisia.

Saudi Arabia's historic breakthrough

Saudi Arabia produced one of Asia's most memorable World Cup moments in 1994.

Competing in its first World Cup, Saudi Arabia advanced to Round of 16 behind a legendary solo goal from Saeed Al-Owairan against Belgium, which is still considered one of the tournament's greatest goals.

Can Asia go even further?

Asia enters the 2026 FIFA World Cup with several teams capable of making deep runs. Japan arrives as one of the continent's biggest hopes after reaching the Round of 16 in consecutive tournaments and defeating Germany and Spain during its memorable 2022 campaign.

South Korea will once again lean on Son Heung-min as it looks to build on its history as the only Asian nation to reach a World Cup semifinal. Australia and Saudi Arabia also enter the tournament with confidence after recent World Cup successes, while Iran remains one of Asia's most consistent qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan will make its long-awaited World Cup debut. The world will be watching to see if Asia produces another historic run on soccer's biggest stage.
