Elmo's NBA Finals Message Sparks Backlash From New York Knicks Fans: 'Pick a Side'

Elmo found himself at the center of an unexpected social media debate after offering a wholesome message ahead of the NBA Finals.

Before Game 1 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday (June 3), the beloved Sesame Street character shared a simple post on X. "Elmo hopes both teams have fun!" he wrote, accompanied by a series of basketball emojis.

What seemed like a harmless expression of sportsmanship quickly turned into a discussion as fans questioned why Elmo wasn't publicly backing the Knicks.

The reaction largely centered on the fact that Sesame Street has long been associated with New York City. Many users argued that Elmo, as one of the franchise's most recognizable residents, should have been firmly in the Knicks' corner.

"This isn't the time for sportsmanship Elmo. These streets ain't sesame," one fan wrote, while others jokingly accused the furry red character of refusing to support his hometown team during one of its biggest moments in decades.

"Elmo, you're from the city. Pick a side man," one user joked.

Meanwhile, the Knicks gave their supporters even more reason to celebrate by defeating the Spurs 105-95 in Game 1 at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The win gave New York a 1-0 lead in the series heading into Game 2.

After watching the internet spiral over his comments, Elmo eventually returned with a response of his own.

"KNICKS that last message!" he joked. "Elmo didn't mean to SPUR you on!"

The pun-filled follow-up quickly earned laughs from fans and helped bring the unexpected controversy to a playful close.
