David Beckham is officially set to become "Sir David" after he was named for knighthood by King Charles III as part of the British Royal’s annual birthday honors.

The English soccer icon will be recognized for his legendary sports career and continued contributions to British society, according to a report from People. Although the announcement has been made public, the formal investiture ceremony will be scheduled at a later date. Along with the honor, Beckham’s wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, will now be known as Lady Beckham.

Beckham previously received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) from Queen Elizabeth II in 2003. His knighthood follows his appointment as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation in 2024.

"I’m excited to be working with The King’s Foundation," Beckham said, regarding his appointment as ambassador. "I’ve always been keen to help young people expand their horizons… and I’m on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills."

Beckham is widely regarded as one of the most influential soccer players of his era. He rose to international fame during his time with Manchester United, where he won six Premier League titles and the Champions League. Over his career, he became the first English player to earn 100 Champions League appearances and secured league titles in four countries: England, Spain, France, and the United States.

A long-serving captain of England’s national team, Beckham represented the country in three FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships. He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021.

Since retiring from professional soccer Beckham has remained deeply involved in the sport and philanthropy. He co-owns Major League Soccer club Inter Miami and has served as a UNICEF ambassador since 2005.
