Former NFL star Aldon Smith, one of the most dominant pass rushers of his era, has died at the age of 36.
The San Francisco 49ers announced Smith's death Saturday morning (June 13), mourning the loss of the former first-round pick who helped lead the franchise to a Super Bowl appearance during the early 2010s.
"We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith," the team said in a statement.
The organization praised Smith's remarkable talent, calling his rookie campaign one of the best the NFL has ever seen.
"Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization," the statement continued.
The 49ers also remembered Smith for the impact he made away from football.
"Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into," the team said. "Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon."
No cause of death was immediately announced.
Smith starred at the University of Missouri from 2008 to 2010, earning All-Big 12 honors before declaring for the NFL Draft. The 49ers selected him with the No. 7 overall pick in 2011.
He wasted little time establishing himself as one of the league's most feared defenders.
Smith recorded 14 sacks as a rookie and followed it up with a sensational 2012 season in which he amassed 19.5 sacks, helping propel San Francisco to Super Bowl XLVII. During his four seasons with the franchise, he appeared in 50 games and totaled 44 sacks, 152 tackles, five forced fumbles, an interception, and five passes defended.
His play earned him Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors and made him a cornerstone of one of the NFL's most dominant defenses.
After leaving San Francisco, Smith spent time with the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys. However, his career was repeatedly interrupted by suspensions and off-field issues, including violations of the NFL's substance abuse and personal conduct policies.
Despite the setbacks, Smith's peak remains unforgettable to many football fans. At his best, he was one of the sport's most explosive defenders, capable of taking over games with his speed and power.
