Has the Date for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor Finally Been Revealed?

The on-again, off-again negotiations between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather are emblematic of the latter's career. Boxing fans had to wait years before they watched Mayweather absolutely dismantle Manny Pacquiao, and his desire to exploit every edge at the negotiation table is a reason he's raked in the big bucks over the years.

Remember that before you get too excited about a potential date for a McGregor-Mayweather fight. That said, Mayweather's promotions company has been working behind-the-scenes, and some anecdotal evidence points to a possible bout on Aug. 26.

So here are the details—on the professional calendar for the Nevada Athletic Commission, Mayweather Promotions is listed as a fight promoter for a TBA fight on Aug. 26. The fight is scheduled for the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which is a significant detail. It's the only arena Mayweather has fought in over the last decade, dating back to his split decision over Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. While there's a chance he doesn't fight on the 26th, there's almost zero chance any Mayweather fight would take place away from the MGM Grand.

The buzz in Mayweather's hometown has also begun to build. A report from the Las Vegas Review Journal over the weekend cited sources who claim the Mayweather-McGregor bout will take place "sooner than you think." The justification centers around a need to get the fight in before a heavily anticipated battle between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady "Triple-G" Golovkin in mid-September, so that McGregor and Mayweather can maximize profits.

Both fighters look like they're just about ready to begin preparation for the fight. McGregor has repeatedly shared photos of him doing fight prep on his Instagram page, and he left an ominous message on one of his most recent posts: "Something BIG is coming," he said.

Although Mayweather's negotiations are believed to be ongoing, even he looks like he's getting his act together. The 40-year-old boxer was recently spotted sparring with undefeated boxing prospect Devin Haney—who has a fight of his own upcoming on June 24—so at the very least he's keeping himself sharp for when the moment arrives.

As he was in the late stages of an overseas trip last month, Mayweather promised we'd see how things play out once he returned to Vegas. It's time to put up or shut up for both parties, and with Manny Pacquiao threatening to take his place if he doesn't agree to fight, the onus is on Mayweather to settle his end of the deal.
