Sports journalist Iris Cisneros will make history on Saturday by becoming the first woman to call a match on Spanish-language television in the Unites States with Univision. She will provide commentary on the Liga MX game between America and Leon at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City alongside TV host Pablo Ramirez.
The move is part of Univision’s daylong celebration on Saturday of International Women’s Day, which was on Thursday. Cisneros won’t be the only woman in charge of things at the network: Univision has also announced that other female reporters and several women behind the scenes will also work on Saturday.
The network says a total of 11 women will be in charge of covering Saturday’s match, including Contacto Deportivo's co-host Ana Caty Hernández providing commentary and journalist Cristina Romero providing behind-the-scenes reporting. In addition, an award-winning female production team will be in charge of directing, producing, and assisting during the broadcast. This is the most amount of women ever involved in covering a single soccer match.
The broadcast will also feature a special message for women as part of Univision Deportes’ #EllasTambiénJuegan (#TheyAlsoPlay) initiative that works to encourage and celebrate female representation and participation in soccer.
Cisneros has been working as a sports journalist with a focus on soccer for seven years. Previously, she worked with Sky Sports and focused on the Premier League and La Liga in Mexico, as well as hosting Sky Sports News.
