The grandson of legendary former Duke men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski was charged with driving while impaired over the weekend in connection with a collision that killed a 15-year-old boy who was riding an e-bike.
According to a news release from the Durham Police Department, obtained by WNCN CBS 17, the teenager was riding in front of Joseph Savarino, 26, who was driving a Ford Explorer in the same direction when the crash occurred just before 9 p.m. on Saturday (April 18) in Durham.
Authorities said the teen was struck by the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Court documents say Savarino admitted he had been drinking before getting behind the wheel. A breathalyzer test was conducted on Savarino around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, revealing he had a 0.11 blood alcohol content, above the 0.08 legal limit, as reported by TMZ Sports.
Savarino was released from jail on Monday after posting his $100,000 bail. A judge issued an order to revoke his license.
In a Facebook post shared on Sunday (April 19), Allison O’Shea identified the victim as her son, Jack, alongside her husband Chris.
“It is with unfathomable sadness that Chris and I share that our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome baby boy, Jack, passed away yesterday, April 18th, at just 15 years old,” O’Shea wrote.
“We are finding comfort in what was his last perfect day. He woke up and asked to go to confession at Immaculate Conception Church. He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did — showed up fully and excelled at first base. Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends.”
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
