In case you haven't noticed, Las Vegas is having a real moment right now in the world of sports.
An NHL team is slated to begin playing in Vegas in 2017, with the logo, color scheme, and uniforms being unveiled next month. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders are getting closer and closer to becoming a reality. Now, it appears that an NBA team could be around the corner.
During an interview with KNPR’s State of Nevada, MGM Resorts International CEO Jim Murren said he's working on bringing an NBA team to Las Vegas, but there's one catch. "It wouldn’t be an expansion team,” Murren said. “It would most likely be relocation of a team.”
Earlier this year, the $375 million T-Mobile Arena was opened. It hosted its first major sporting event one month later when Canelo Alvarez defeated Amir Khan. Since the aforementioned NHL expansion team will call the T-Mobile Arena home starting next October, it wouldn't be implausible to believe that any relocating NBA team could play in the same place. However, Murren wouldn't confirm that to be the case.
In the meantime, Murren plans to have Las Vegas host more NBA exhibition and summer league games with the hopes of drawing the interest of a team in the near future.
