Cam Newton Says He's Willing to Be a Backup Quarterback, Lists QBs He Would Play Behind

Cam Newton, who is currently searching for another chance to play quarterback in the NFL, establishes that he would be a backup, but there's a caveat.

Cam Newton wants to set the record straight.

Newton posted a nearly 18-minute video on his YouTube page Wednesday to address a variety of topics. The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player said during his 2021 appearance on the I AM ATHLETE podcast that “there aren’t 32 guys better than me,” implying he could still be a starting quarterback in the league. While Cam’s stance remains unchanged two years later, the 33-year-old declared he’s willing to be a backup QB, depending on the team.

Newton said he put together a list of organizations he would want to join based on two criteria: being able to compete for a starting job, or to serve as a mentor.

At the 4:20 mark above, Cam starts naming the quarterbacks he would back up. Of the eight players he rattles off, Deshaun Watson (Cleveland Browns), Justin Fields (Chicago Bears), Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles), Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins), and Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) have a lock on the starting job for their respective teams.

Malik Willis (Tennessee Titans) and Sam Howell (Washington Commanders) were mentioned, but neither has been confirmed as a starter, leaving the door open for a QB competition. Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers were also named. It’s unclear if Jackson will remain with the Baltimore Ravens, while Rodgers will likely end up with the New York Jets.

Newton said he’s open to backing up one of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft class: Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson.

Cam participated in Auburn’s Pro Day late last month, but has yet to receive a call.
