Crep Protect has teamed up with endurance cyclist Sarah Ruggins as she takes on a world-record attempt to ride more than 6,000km from Spain to the Arctic Circle in under three weeks.
Last Friday, Ruggins set off from Tarifa, Spain, with her sights set on becoming the fastest person to cycle from Europe’s southernmost point to Nordkapp, Norway, a route that stretches across the continent and into the Arctic Circle. To break the record, she will need to complete the journey in under 17 days, averaging more than 500km a day while surviving on less than 90 minutes of sleep.
The challenge, known as the One Way North Challenge, will push both body and mind to the limit. Along the route, Ruggins is expected to face everything from 35°C heat in southern Spain to temperatures as low as -10°C in the Arctic. Her latest feat comes after a remarkable journey into endurance sport.
Diagnosed with an autoimmune condition at the age of 15, she was forced to relearn how to walk and use her hands before eventually becoming one of the few women to hold an endurance cycling world record over male competitors. Ruggins previously broke the men’s record for cycling the length of Britain and back, finishing more than seven hours ahead of the previous benchmark.
