Arturo Gatti Jr. was only 10 months old when his boxing legend father, Arturo Gatti Sr., was found dead in a hotel.
The circumstances were "mysterious," according to ESPN, and the cause of death for the father shifted from homicide to suicide, with his wife, and Jr.'s mother, Amanda Rodrigues Gatti, initially accused and then cleared.
Now, tragedy has struck the family in a chillingly similar manner. Gatti Jr., only 17 and an amateur boxer, was found dead in Mexico on October 8.
WBA Boxing announced Gatti Jr.'s death on October 8, writing, on X, "The WBA and the boxing world mourn the passing of Arturo Gatti Jr. His journey was just beginning, yet his spirit will live on — now reunited with his legendary father among the stars. Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."
A formal cause of death was not given.
However, boxing manager Chuck Zito offered a tribute on Instagram, and he shed some light on a possible cause of death. He was Gatti Sr.'s former bodyguard.
"It's with a heavy heart that I have to say,.... R.I.P. to 17-year-old ARTURO GATTI JR. who was found hanging in an apartment in Mexico yesterday," he wrote. "The same way they found his Father dead in an apartment in Brazil 16 years ago. My condolences to Arturo Gatti Seniors - Mom, Sisters, Brothers, and his daughter Sophia."
The son's coach also confirmed his tragic death.
"It's unfortunately not a joke or rumor. Arturo is gone. I'd appreciate if you stop reaching out at this time," Gatti Jr.'s coach, Moe Latif, wrote on his Instagram story.
Amanda Rodrigues Gatti spoke to 48 Hours Mystery about her son in an episode that explored how the father died.
"He's everything I asked God for," she said. "Junior makes me complete."
In 2009, 48 Hours Mystery reported, "Amanda was arrested for murder and held before investigators shocked the world with their findings: Arturo Gatti, world class fighter who never gave up in the ring, had committed suicide."
