18-Year-Old Incoming Ole Miss Player Corey Adams Dies in Shooting

The athlete was an incoming freshman player at the University of Mississippi.

Before h his freshman debut on the Ole Miss Rebels team, athlete Corey Adams was tragically gunned down in a shooting over the weekend.

According to Memphis news outlet WREG, the 18-year-old succumbed to injuries after being one of five people shot outside a house in Cordova, just east of Memphis. On Saturday (July 19), the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 10:14 p.m. and arrived at the intersection of Forest Hill-Irene and Walnut Grove. There, Adams was found dead on the scene. The four other men who were shot were taken to area hospitals in individual vehicles and were in non-critical condition. The group was attending a house party in the area.

The University of Mississippi issued a statement on Adams' untimely passing, writing, "We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee. While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."

Adams, who was set to make his Ole Miss debut as a defensive lineman in the fall, hailed from New Orleans, where he earned two All-State honors at his alma mater, Edna Karr High School.

"Corey Adams was more than a football player! He was a friend, brother, son, student, and all around great young man," the high school wrote about Adams in an Instagram post.
