Damson Idris has been named global ambassador for Formula 1 one year after starring in F1: The Movie.
Just weeks before the sports film heads to the Academy Awards, where it’s nominated in four categories, the actor was formally welcomed to the sports league on Wednesday (Feb. 25).
The Joseph Kosinski-directed film also starred Brad Pitt and grossed over $630 million globally.
In his partnership with F1, Idris, whose credits include Snowfall and Swarm, will bridge the sports organization with the entertainment field. The British actor will attend several Grand Prix competitions and support the brand through various content elements to introduce new fans to car racing.
Earlier this week, the 34-year-old kicked off the new F1 season with the new “All To Drive For” campaign.
“I’m delighted to welcome Damson Idris officially to the Formula 1 family,” said Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, in press materials. “In Formula 1, we are all about authenticity and Damson is passionate about the sport and shares our vision to grow it, so it’s fantastic that we’ll continue to work with him.”
“I’ve always been drawn to spaces where culture, performance, and precision meet, and Formula 1 sits right at the centre of that,” Idris added. “I had an enormous amount of respect for it before making the film, but getting closer to it gave me a real understanding of the innovation, the heart, and the intensity behind everything, and the elite level the drivers operate at.”
Idris, who also owns luxury jewelry brand DIDRIS, will next star in fantasy epic Children of Blood and Bone, slated to release in January 2027.
