A power plant in Iceland has been running off a nearby volcano for years. Now Carbon Recycling International wants to take the carbon monoxide it gives off and convert it to a fuel called "Vulcanol." It's scientific name is methanol, and it can be used to power cars.
So why switch to methanol instead of regular gas? Methanol doesn't emit carbon monoxide, soot, or any other carcinogens. It's also readily available, and not just for those near volcanoes. Methanol can be created from recycled CO2, biomethane, or solid waste biomass, and even undifferentiated municipal waste, says KC Tran, CEO of Carbon Recycling International.
