Man Apprehended After Strolling Onto Field During Phillies-Pirates Game

If the man was attempting to distract the Phillies for the hometown Pirates, he succeeded.

One would think security is pretty tight during a professional sporting event. But one baseball fan proved the MLB needs to make some adjustments when he casually walked on to the field during the middle of a Philadelphia-Pittsburgh game.

Right before the seventh-inning stretch, a man strolled onto the diamond at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. In a video of the incident, the man can be seen walking toward the back of the batter's box where the Phillies' Brad Miller was standing. It appears the man was trying to get Miller to shake his hand, but neither the infielder nor the crowd was amused.

The most shocking thing about this incident was how long it took the park's security to respond. Assuming he was seated in the stands, the rogue fan was able to leave his seat, bypass the officials, and make it onto the field before being noticed. Once he was spotted, the security guards walked just as calmly to apprehend the fan. To their credit, one official opened up into a light jog after his partner grabbed the man's arm.

It's unclear what the man's motives were, but if he was attempting to distract the Phillies for the hometown Pirates, he succeeded. After he was handcuffed and taken into custody, Miller grounded into a double-play that ended the sixth inning. Yet while he may have won the battle, Philadelphia ended up winning the war. After extending the game, Philly topped the Pirates by a score of 2-1 in the 11th inning.
