Victor Wembanyama is known to get emotional after games.
On Thursday, New York City held the championship parade for the Knicks, who, earlier this month, defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. Fans gathered en masse, including one who brought a cutout of Wemby in tears.
When an ABC7 reporter asked the fan why he brought the cutout, the man sighed before saying, “This is just history right now.” He then added, “Forget this guy,” before praising New York, alongside the crowd.
While it doesn’t seem that Wembanyama publicly cried after the Spurs lost in the Finals, he has previously become rapt with emotion. In May, after winning the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 22-year-old shed some tears: this year would mark his first appearance in the NBA Finals.
While it doesn’t appear that Wembanyama publicly cried after the Finals, he did admit that losing the title to the Knicks was “painful.” That was the same game where the New York team came back from a 29-point deficit, with OG Anunoby clinching the win with 1.2 seconds remaining.
“I don’t know about the emotions, but it was painful, of course,” Wembanyama said on June 10. “We work too hard and give up our leads, you know. It’s as simple as that. It just hurts.”
On June 13, the Knicks beat the Spurs, marking the first time the franchise has won the championship in 53 years.
