Joakim Noah Says Learning About Derrick Rose’s ACL Injury Gave Him ‘Same Feeling’ as 9/11

Joakim Noah still has a vivid memory of Derrick Rose tearing his ACL in the 2012 NBA Playoffs.

In a new episode of Zach Lowe’s podcast The Lowe Post, Noah likened the feeling he had when he learned about the injury to the one he had when he first learned of 9/11.

“There are moments in your life where you just know when it happened you know exactly what you were doing,” he said. “You knew exactly where you were. And when I found out that Derrick had tore his ACL. Like I remember the smells. I remember who I was with. I remember where… I remember everything. Almost like the same feeling. I had the same feeling of when I saw the plane hit the tower.”

He also acknowledged how wild the comparison is. “That’s the same feeling I had, like, people will say he’s like uh he’s [bleeping] crazy for saying something. No, I’m telling you how I felt. This is how I felt. I had the same feeling when I saw the plane hit the towers when I heard that.”

Rose endured the injury during a playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers, back when he and Noah were both on the Chicago Bulls. The injury played a huge role in derailing the team’s chances at a championship, and altered the course of Rose’s career.
