High School Basketball Player Arrested After Video Shows Him Punching Opponent During Postgame Handshakes (UPDATE)

Footage of the incident shows the Carlisle Wildcats player hitting a member of his Nevada opponents, when the two teams exchanged handshakes after the game.

UPDATED 12/2, 11:05 a.m. ET: 17-year-old Carter Prenosil has been arrested on a felony charge of willful injury, causing serious injury. He has been released on bond.

“Court documents allege [Prenosil] threw an ‘unwarranted punch’ at Nevada player Ty Dittmer’s abdomen and face,” KCCI 8 News reports.

A police press release says Dittmer was knocked unconsciousness and “immediately received medical care,” suffering “injuries to his mouth.”

Carlisle superintendent Bryce Amos told the outlet, “This is without question an unfortunate incident that is not representative of the school culture that exists in Carlisle Community School District. I want to make it clear that this type of conduct is not tolerated at Carlisle CSD.”

An Iowa high school basketball player sucker-punched his opponent after losing a game, the Des Moines Registerreports.

Footage of the incident shows the Carlisle Wildcats player hitting a member of his Nevada High School opponents, when the two teams exchanged handshakes after the game. In the nine-second video, the Wildcats player hits his opponent twice; once in the stomach and once in the face. At the end of the video, players from both teams are attempting to separate the two.

The Nevada player—identified as senior Ty Dittmer, the team’s guard—can be seen falling backward onto his teammate, who then starts throwing punches at the Carlisle player, senior Carter Prenosil.

While it’s unclear why the Wildcats player resorted to violence, it might have something to do with the game’s outcome. According to the Register, Nevada won its season opener 72-47. Nevada has started its season with a 1-0 record, and Carlisle is 0-2. According to TMZ, police are investigating the incident.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation,” Nevada superintendent Dr. Steve Gray told TMZ. “I’m happy they deescalated it. I thought our coaches and staff handled it well and got everyone out of there without it worsening.”
