Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant came to Dak Prescott's defense Saturday, after the team signed Andy Dalton to a one-year deal worth $7 million.
“Nothing against Andy dalton because I think he’s a great player,” Bryant tweeted. "But the cowboys are extremely out of line... Pay Dak... I watched the cowboys pay Tony Twice once without a winning rec... I guess the cowboys viewing the QB position a plug in piece because of the dominant offense.”
The Cowboys and Prescott have been in contract talks for some time, but have so far failed to see eye-to-eye. While Dalton will likely begin the season as Prescott's backup, Bryant seems to view the former Bengals QB as a threat to Dallas' current QB, and pointed to the fact that Tony Romo was treated far more fairly during his tenure with the Cowboys.
Bryant took a lot of heat online for his take on the situation, and tried to steer the conversation in a different direction.
The forthcoming season will be Prescott’s fifth with Dallas, which franchise tagged him back in March. Though it appeared as though both sides landed on a contract last year, Prescott reportedly passed on the deal, which would have landed him $33 million per season.
Bryant previously played eight seasons for Dallas, and was subsequently released in 2018. He then signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints but ultimately ruptured his Achilles during the second practice with the team. He hasn’t played a game since.
