Prior to this match, Mayweather turned down a six-fight, $12.75 million contract offer from HBO. After it, a lot of boxing experts questioned whether or not that was a good move. Mayweather didn't perform particularly well during this match—he blamed it on the fact that his right hand and wrist were injured—and Vargas said Mayweather had "a lack of courage." So his future seemed to be up in the air after this fight despite his win.
43.Mayweather vs. Jesus Chavez
Date: 7/12/1997
Location: Grand Biloxi Casino Hotel Spa in Biloxi, Miss.

Record before fight: 36-0
Title implications: Retained IBO Welterweight title and won WBC, IBA, and The Ring Welterweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
Quite a few people who attended this fight actually left before it was over. It didn't feature much action from either fighter. In fact, the only real drama came after the fight when Mayweather revealed that he was going to retire following his next fight.
"One more fight and I'm through," he said. "I don't need boxing. I'm not in it for the money. It's about legacy. I'm rich, and I've accomplished what I want."
37.Mayweather vs. Angelo Nunez
Date: 11/20/1997

36.Mayweather vs. Edgar Ayala
Date: 2/1/1997
Location: Swiss Park Hall in Chula Vista, Calif.
Record before fight: 3-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:TKO in Round 2
In the middle of the second round, Mayweather told Ayala—who was bleeding from his nose after taking a series of shots—to stop running from him and fight. Ayala probably shouldn't have listened to him.
35.Mayweather vs. Larry O'Shields
Date: 6/14/1997
Location:Alamodome in San Antonio, TX
Record before fight: 7-0
Title implications: N/A

A lot of people expected Mayweather to knock O'Shields out. He got more than he bargained for from him, but he was ultimately able to demonstrate his patience in the ring during this fight.

Location: Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 20-0
Title implications: Retained Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles

32.Mayweather vs. Miguel Melo
Date: 3/23/1998
Location: Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.
Record before fight: 14-0
Title implications: N/A

31.Mayweather vs. Gustavo Cuello
Date: 4/18/1998
Location: Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles
Record before fight: 15-0
Title implications: N/A

Although Mayweather was able to win this fight easily—he taunted Cuello at several times in the fourth round by sticking his tongue out at him—Cuello was the first fighter to last ten rounds with him.
30.Mayweather vs. Carlos Hernandez
Date: 5/26/2001
Location: Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Record before fight: 25-0
Title implications: Retained Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
The best part about this fight was that it was promoted using a poster that looked like the front of a No Limit album. Other than that, it was mostly a dud because of the fact that Mayweather had to fight after receiving novocaine shots in both his hands due to injuries.
29.Mayweather vs. Felipe Garcia
Date: 10/14/1997
Location: Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho
Record before fight: 10-0

28.Mayweather vs. Sam Girard
Date: 2/28/1998
Location:Bally's Atlantic City in Atlantic City, N.J.
Record before fight: 13-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:TKO in Round 2
Girard tried to trade shots with Mayweather, who was fighting with his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. in his corner for the first time ever. That strategy backfired in the second round when Mayweather dominated him and then knocked him out.
27.Mayweather vs. Angel Manfredy
Date: 12/19/1998
Location:Miccosukee Resort & Gaming in Miami
Record before fight: 18-0
Title implications: Retained Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles
Result:TKO in Round 2
After the fight, Manfredy claimed that Mayweather's first-ever title defense had been "rigged." But he didn't put up much of a fight in the ring and, at times, refused to fight back when Mayweather attacked.
"I'm throwing shots," Mayweather said afterwards, "and he's not coming back with nothing."
26.Mayweather vs. DeMarcus Corley
Date: 5/22/2004
Location: Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
Record before fight: 31-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:UD after Round 12
Just one week after Roy Jones sustained a stunning loss to Antonio Tarver, Mayweather made a case for the "best pound-for-pound boxer" title by picking Corley apart. He knocked him down twice during their fight and was never challenged in the lopsided match.
25.Mayweather vs. Hector Arroyo
Date: 1/9/1998
Location: Grand Biloxi Casino Hotel Spa in Biloxi, Miss.
Record before fight: 12-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:TKO in Round 5
After this match, Mayweather let it be known that he was coming for the No. 1 spot.
"I don't want to rush it," he said, "but I feel I'm ready to face a world champion or a top contender. It's obvious that I'm getting close. I want to be a world champion as quickly as possible."
24.Mayweather vs. Carlos Gerena
Date: 9/11/1999
Location: Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 21-0
Title implications: Retained Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles
Result:RTD in Round 7
After knocking Gerena down twice in the first round, Mayweather went on to connect on 220 of the 346 punches that he threw during the fight. It forced the referee to stop the match in the seventh round after the ringside doctor told him that Gerena was too banged up to continue.
23.Mayweather vs. Henry Bruseles
Date: 1/22/2005
Location: American Airlines Arena in Miami
Record before fight: 32-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:TKO in Round 8
Fighting in a pair of "Philthy Rich Records" trunks (remember that period of his career?), Mayweather dissected Bruseles with a precise attack. He got into a brief screaming match with his uncle/trainer Roger Mayweather during the fifth round, but it didn't stop him from winning easily.
"I trained hard for this fight," he said. "It was no dispute, we were just having fun."
22.Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero
Date: 5/4/2013
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 43-0
Title implications: Retained WBC Welterweight title and won The Ring Welterweight title
Result:UD after Round 12
Guerrero had a ton of trouble when it came to landing punches. He threw 581 of them but only 113 connected. And while he was surprisingly able to handle just about everything Mayweather threw at him, he was simply overmatched during the fight.
21.Mayweather vs. Jesus Chavez
Date: 11/10/2001
Location: Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco
Record before fight: 26-0
Title implications: Retained Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles
Result:RTD in Round 9
Chavez kept up with Mayweather for the first half of the fight. But by the ninth round, he was taking a beating and his trainer pulled the plug on the match by telling Chavez, "You're getting hit too much now."
20.Mayweather vs. Carlos Rios
Date: 2/17/1999
Location: Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Record before fight: 19-0
Title implications: Retained Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
Fighting in his hometown, Mayweather was expected to knock Rios down early and often. That didn't happen as Rios went the distance with him. But Mayweather put a positive spin on it after the fight.
"I'm glad it went 12 rounds so I could show people all over the world that Floyd Mayweather can go the distance," he said. "Carlos Rios was a very tough opponent. He came to fight and that's what I wanted tonight."
19.Mayweather vs. Jose Luis Castillo II
Date: 12/7/2002
Location: Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 28-0
Title implications: Retained WBC and The Ring lightweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
Although Castillo threw more than 600 punches during the fight, Mayweather refused to mix it up with him and was on the defensive for much of the fight. It led to the judges scoring it much closer than the first Mayweather/Castillo fight. But in the end, Castillo didn't do enough to take Mayweather's belts from him.
18.Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana II
Date: 9/13/2014
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 46-0
Title implications: Retained WBA Super Welterweight, WBC and The Ring Welterweight, and WBC Light Middleweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
The second Mayweather/Maidana fight didn't pack as much of a punch as the first one. The most exciting moment came in the eighth round when Maidana appeared to bite Mayweather's hand. But outside of that, Mayweather did enough to earn a rather decisive victory.
17.Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
Date: 9/19/2009
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 39-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:UD after Round 12
After flirting with the idea of retiring from boxing forever and taking almost two years off, Mayweather made his return to the ring against Marquez. He was rusty at the beginning of the fight. But eventually, he was able to get Marquez on the ground and hold him off.
"I've been off for two years, so it felt like it took me a couple of rounds to really know I was back in the ring again," he said following the fight. "I know I'll get better."
16.Mayweather vs. Genaro Hernandez
Date: 10/3/1998
Location: Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 17-0
Title implications: Won Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles
Result:RTD in Round 8
Hernandez's only loss prior to this fight had come against Oscar De La Hoya. But Mayweather dominated him and forced his corner to stop the match in the eighth round. Hernandez retired from the sport of boxing a short time later.
15.Mayweather vs. Victoriano Sosa
Date: 4/19/2003
Location:Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif.
Record before fight: 29-0
Title implications: Retained WBC and The Ring lightweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
Sosa was able to hit Mayweather with a series of hard punches throughout the match, which excited the crowd. But Mayweather put on a clinic by killing him with jabs.
"Don't go by the oohs and ahs," he said after the fight. "That's not what boxing's about."
14.Mayweather vs. Sharmba Mitchell
Date: 11/19/2005
Location: Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.
Record before fight: 34-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:TKO in Round 6
Even though Mayweather throughly defeated Arturo Gatti prior to fighting Mitchell, a lot of his critics were still ripping him for not throwing enough punches during his fights. So he tried to change that during this fight by throwing 65 power punches in six rounds.
"They say I can't punch," he said after the match. "But 24 [knockouts] out of 35 [fights]—I must be getting them out of there."
13.Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz
Date: 9/17/2011
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 41-0
Title implications: Won WBC Welterweight title
Result:KO in Round 4
Mayweather earned a controversial knockout win when Ortiz let his guard down with one second left in the fourth round and got knocked out. And the night was made even more controversial when Mayweather got into it with HBO's Larry Merchant during his post-fight interview.
"I'm going to do you a favor and let you talk to Victor Ortiz," Mayweather said, "because you've never given me a fair share. You ain't shit."
Merchant responded, "If I was 50 years younger, I would kick your ass."
12.Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton
Date: 12/8/2007
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 38-0
Title implications: Retained WBC and The Ring Welterweight titles
Result:TKO in Round 10
Thousands of British fans attended this fight, hoping Hatton—who was undefeated at the time—would knock off Mayweather. Pretty Boy picked him apart, though, and ended the fight earlier than expected.
"I took my time," he said afterwards. "I fought inside and outside. A true champion can adapt to anything."
11.Mayweather vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez
Date: 9/14/2013
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 44-0
Title implications: Retained WBA Super Light Middleweight title and won WBC and The Ring Light Middleweight title
Result:MD after Round 12
Canelo stuck with Mayweather for the first half of the fight. But after that, he seemed to get tired and, by the end, Mayweather was having his way with him. Shortly after the match ended, Canelo admitted that he simply couldn't keep up.
"I couldn't catch him," he said. "He was very elusive…I did not know how to get him. He is very intelligent. He's got a lot of experience. Honestly, I couldn't find him."
10.Mayweather vs. Emanuel Augustus
Date: 10/21/2000
Location:Cobo Center in Detroit
Record before fight: 23-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:TKO in Round 9
In 2012, Mayweather referred to Augustus as the toughest fighter he had ever taken on. But the outcome of this match was never really in doubt as Mayweather landed more than 40 percent of his punches before eventually knocking Augustus down.
9.Mayweather vs. Phillip N'dou
Date: 11/1/2003
Location: Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Record before fight: 30-0
Title implications: Retained WBC and The Ring lightweight titles
Result:TKO in Round 7
After several unimpressive fights in 2002 and 2003, Mayweather bounced back against N'dou and was never challenged. N'dou called him "something special" after the fight, and Mayweather pointed out that he had made it his mission to be on the attack more than he had been in previous matches.
"I wanted to throw a lot more punches, give fans a war," he said. "My plan was to stand in the pocket and give some shots and take some shots."
8.Mayweather vs. Zab Judah
Date: 4/8/2006
Location: Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 35-0
Title implications: Won IBF and IBO Welterweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
After an early scare that featured Judah nearly knocking Mayweather to the ground in the second round, Mayweather assumed control of the fight in the fifth and worked his way to a victory. But the real action came in the 10th round when Judah hit Mayweather with a low blow and a punch to the back of the head. It resulted in an all-out brawl in the ring with members of Mayweather's camp getting into it with Judah. Judah later had his boxing license revoked for a year as a result of the altercation.
7.Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana I
Date: 5/3/2014
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 45-0
Title implications: Retained WBC and The Ring Welterweight titles and won WBA Super Welterweight title
Result:MD after Round 12
Maidana's plan from the start of the fight was simple: Try to knock Mayweather out. He attacked and attacked and attacked, just like he had against Adrien Broner before knocking him out. But Mayweather was able to fend him off and, outside of a cut that Mayweather sustained in the fourth round due to a head-butt, Maidana wasn't able to inflict much pain.
6.Mayweather vs. Arturo Gatti
Date: 6/25/2005
Location: Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
Record before fight: 33-0
Title implications: Won WBC Light Welterweight title
Result:RTD in Round 6
This picture pretty much describes how the fight went. It wasn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination. But Mayweather had his way with Gatti after calling him a "club fighter" before the match and really established himself as a legitimate force to be reckoned with.
5.Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya
Date: 5/5/2007
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 37-0
Title implications: Won WBC Light Middleweight title
Result:SD after Round 12
After all the hype surrounding the match, the fight wasn't what most people had hoped for. Mayweather won, but it very nearly ended in a draw and didn't feature a ton of action. Still, it was one of the most important matches of Mayweather's career.
"It was a masterpiece of boxing," Mayweather said. "I showed you why I am the best fighter of this era."
4.Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley
Date: 5/1/2010
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 40-0
Title implications: N/A
Result:UD after Round 12
Rather than sitting back and letting the fight come to him, Mayweather went on the offensive against Mosley and gave fans what they wanted to see. He threw more punches than Mosley—and, more importantly, connected on more punches than Mosley—and walked away with an impressive victory.
"I wanted to give the fans what they wanted to see, a toe-to-toe battle," he said. "It wasn't the same style for me, but I wanted to be aggressive and I knew I could do it."
3.Mayweather vs. Diego Corrales
Date: 1/20/2001
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 24-0
Title implications: Retained Lineal and WBC Super Featherweight titles
Result:TKO in Round 10
In the weeks leading up to this fight, Mayweather pelted Corrales with insults and criticized him for getting arrested on felony spousal abuse charges. He later claimed that he only did it to "hype" the fight. But once the two men were in the ring, Mayweather overwhelmed him with speed and forced the ref to stop the fight in the tenth round.
2.Mayweather vs. Jose Luis Castillo I
Date: 4/20/2002
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 27-0
Title implications: Won WBC and The Ring lightweight titles
Result:UD after Round 12
This was one of the only controversial wins of Mayweather's career. The judges all awarded him an easy victory. But the crowd in attendance booed loudly when he was announced as the winner and promoter Bob Arum called the judges' scoring for the fight "ludicrous." It was a close fight and one of the only times that Mayweather was ever really challenged.
1.Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto
Date: 5/5/2012
Location: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
Record before fight: 42-0
Title implications: Won WBA Super Light Middleweight title
Result:UD after Round 12
Even though the judges for the match gave Mayweather a pretty decisive victory, he had to earn it. He sustained a bloody nose during the fight and later told Cotto that he was "the toughest guy" he ever fought. It's why there was some talk of a rematch between Mayweather and Cotto before the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight was finalized.
