Looking for a new way to break a sweat outdoors? If you want to go beyond the everyday run, but not quite ready to sign up for a muddy obstacle course, there are plenty of middle-of-the-road options for you to try. Thanks to a boom in creative workout classes, runs, and races, there is no excuse to not try something new.

Need some pro tips before you go? Take a friend, not because we think you need a buddy everywhere you go—having a workout partner makes you more likely to go in the first place and motivates you to go harder during class. For your first class, be prepared for the outdoor experience by bringing a water bottle, towel, sunglasses, and whatever else you use at the gym post-sweat. And finally, go with an open, positive attitude. Everything is worth one try. If it’s not the class for you, ask yourself what you felt was lacking and move on to a different class to find the best fit for you.

Wacky Races

For whatever reason, mud runs and crazy obstacle courses kicked off a trend for the weirdest theme runs and races you’ve ever heard of. Like cupcakes? This race ensures you get three cupcakes during the 5k race. Are you more of an EDM obsessive? This run pumps glow-in-the-dark foam at you throughout the run (think rave-style bubble bath). And finally, fans of zombies will love this race for obvious reasons. The best way to find the perfect run for you? Google “run” with whatever noun you love the most (seriously, it’s fun). There is probably a theme run designed just for you, you just have to tap into your weirdest hobby and go for it.

Paddle Boarding

What’s SUP? If you’re close to the coast, sign up for a paddle boarding lesson for an outdoor workout that puts you on top of the water (at least until you lose your balance!). If you’re in SoCal, there are countless options for beginner SUP’ers including classes in L.A., Marina Del Rey, and Hermosa Beach. Thanks to it’s growing popularity, SUP schools can be found in almost every zip code with a body of water. Surf’s up!

Boot Camp

While this isn’t the most under-the-radar option, you’d be surprised how many local gyms offer these programs outdoors. Ultimately, personal trainers want to get away from the daily grind too (PTs, there just like us), so ask your local spot if this is an option. If you’re in NYC, Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp offers hour-long classes throughout the city.

Hiking Yoga

Looking to really get outdoors? Try Hiking Yoga for a class that combines the cardio benefits of hiking with yoga. If you’re interested in a more social experience, this is the class for you. Hiking allows for plenty of time to socialize with friends, while yoga intervals are designed to improve strength, flexibility, and posture. The best part? The Hiking Yoga network is growing, so chances are you won’t have to go far to join in on a class.

Trapeze School

Skiers, snowboarders, downhill skateboarders, this is a challenge for you. Athletes looking for an adrenaline rush should try Trapeze School for an unexpected workout, if you’re in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., or Chicago. The school caters to a wide range of students, from dedicated aerialist to complete beginners, so don’t be afraid to take the leap (wink, wink).

Outdoor Yoga

Love yoga but hate hitting your classmates during poses or that smell that comes with the mats? You need outdoor yoga. If you’re in Colorado, you already know about Yoga on the Rocks. For those of us that can’t take in that particular view, Meetup is a great way to find your local, outdoor om sesh—whether you’re in L.A. or Maine.

Moonboot Cardio

So, yeah…this isn’t a joke. All you need to feel like you’re on a trampoline everywhere you go is these shoes and a can-do attitude. Once you’ve got these puppies, you can take classes with other kangaroo-leaping individuals that channel your favorite dance, strength training, or boot camp classes. We’ll be honest, you’ll need a ton of confidence and lot of practice to look cool in these, but your calf muscles will thank you.
