Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers has been accused of betting on Cyclones sports, including a football game in which he was involved.

The Des Moines Register reports Dekkers, who started in all of ISU's games last year, has been charged with tampering with records related to an investigation into sports gambling courtesy of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Among the 26 wagers Dekkers allegedly placed on Iowa State sporting events, the 22-year-old allegedly bet on a 2021 football game against Oklahoma State, in which Hunter did not play and was the backup quarterback. Draft Kings claims Dekkers issued 366 bets totaling over $2,799.

Meanwhile, Dekkers’ parents claim they “engaged in a scheme” with their son in an effort to disguise his identity. In other words, Dekkers' mother maintains she simply placed bets to make it seem like they were coming from her rather than Hunter.

Dekkers is facing a permanent loss of NCAA eligibility, as the association prohibits collegiate athletes from betting on games, let alone contests in which their team participates.

“No matter what we’re doing, I’m not going to jeopardize the team,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said last month. “What we’ll do is what’s in the best interest of the team."

The news arrives less than two months after several NFL players were suspended for alleged sports gambling.
