With training camp looming and four QBs on the roster, ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Rizzo says calls are being made about Shedeur Sanders’ availability.

Questions surrounding Shedeur Sanders took another turn this week after reports surfaced that teams have been checking with the Cleveland Browns about the young quarterback's availability. While nothing appears imminent, the rumors arrive just weeks before training camp and amid an ongoing battle for the starting job.

Speaking on ESPN Cleveland, Tony Rizzo suggested there is movement behind the scenes. “Talks, ongoing calls about the availability of Shedeur Sanders,” Rizzo said, adding that, in his view, “I don't think the four quarterbacks are going to camp on July 28. I don't. Nothing is imminent, but the calls are being made, and I think it's probably in the best interest of both parties.”

The speculation comes despite an offseason in which Sanders has steadily gained momentum. New head coach Todd Monken praised his command of the offense during spring practices, and league insiders have noted that the second-year quarterback narrowed the gap with veteran Deshaun Watson throughout OTAs and minicamp.

Former NFL receiver Chad Johnson recently argued that Watson would begin the year as QB1, saying, “It is his job to lose,” while predicting the veteran would have six weeks to prove himself.

Even Rizzo acknowledged that Cleveland should devote the season to evaluating Sanders. “This year should be the year to see about Shedeur,” he said. “Let this kid play. Let's see what this kid can do. I'm not saying hand the guy the job. I'm saying, see what you got in this guy.”

Those comments arrive after a busy year for Sanders. The former Colorado star graduated with a sociology degree, returned to his trademark No. 2 jersey, earned a Pro Bowl replacement selection, and recently shattered NFLPA records by collecting $17.7 million in group licensing revenue.

On the field, he went 3-4 as a rookie starter while throwing for 1,400 yards and helping Cleveland finish the season with wins over division rivals.
