Shannon Sharpe isn’t closing the door on a return to ESPN.

While making the rounds on Radio Row, Sharpe reunited publicly with Stephen A. Smith during a live taping of Nightcap, the podcast he co-hosts with Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson. The appearance immediately reignited speculation about whether Sharpe could one day rejoin ESPN’s lineup.

In an interview with Front Office Sports on Thursday, February 5, Sharpe made it clear that the interest is there—though the decision wouldn’t be his to make.

“That’s not my call,” Sharpe said. “I would love to go back if they were to call. That’s their decision. But obviously, I’m more than willing, and I’m more than capable.”

Sharpe pointed to the success of his current media ventures as evidence that his audience remains firmly intact. He noted that Club Shay Shay regularly lands among the most-watched shows on YouTube, often alongside Nightcap in the platform’s top rankings.

“Very few people can say they have a Top 20 show,” Sharpe said. “We normally have two. So clearly, I still have a fan base.”

ESPN declined to comment on Sharpe’s remarks.

The past few years have been turbulent for the Pro Football Hall of Famer. After a highly publicized split from Skip Bayless in 2023 ended his run on FS1’s Undisputed, Sharpe resurfaced at ESPN as a part-time contributor on First Take, a move personally encouraged by Smith. His chemistry with the show’s panel quickly made him a standout, and he signed a multi-year extension in 2024.

At the same time, Sharpe was building a powerful independent platform. Club Shay Shay became one of the biggest podcasts in sports media, fueled in part by viral interviews, including his conversation with Katt Williams that drew tens of millions of views. The launch of Nightcap only expanded his reach.

That momentum stalled in 2025, when a lawsuit filed by an ex-girlfriend led Sharpe to step away from ESPN. The case was later settled, but ESPN ultimately parted ways with him.

Through it all, Sharpe says his relationship with Smith never wavered.

“Stephen A. never left my side,” Sharpe said. “We probably talk more now than when I was actually on the show. He’s been there every step of the way.”
