The Seattle Seahawks are adding a familiar last name to their roster, announcing that they’ve signed wide receiver Brenden Rice — the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice — to their practice squad.

Per the Yakima Herald, the move comes more than two decades after the franchise brought in Jerry Rice for the final stretch of his iconic career in 2004. Now, his son gets a shot to make his own mark in Seattle.

The Seahawks confirmed the transaction alongside the signing of running back Velus Jones Jr. To create space, the team released tight end Marshall Lang and cornerback Mike Reid from the practice squad.

Both Rice and Jones were part of a larger group of eight players who worked out for the team earlier this week.

Brenden Rice arrives in Seattle looking for stability after a winding start to his NFL journey. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound wideout played at Colorado before transferring to USC, where he closed out his college career with 111 receptions, 1,821 yards, and 21 touchdowns across four seasons. His production made him a 2024 seventh-round pick for the Los Angeles Chargers.

As a rookie, Rice appeared in three games, logging time on both offense and special teams before landing on injured reserve in November. The Chargers waived him after the 2025 preseason and he briefly spent time on the New England Patriots’ practice squad earlier this month before being released.

Seattle’s receiver depth has taken several hits in recent weeks, with injuries sidelining rookie Tory Horton and sending practice-squad wideout Tyrone Broden to injured reserve. Dareke Young also hit IR with a hip injury. Rice now steps into a room looking for fresh options.

His arrival naturally brings back memories of his father’s brief but notable stint with the Seahawks. Jerry Rice — still the NFL’s all-time leader in receiving yards with 22,895 — joined Seattle in October 2004 after the team traded a seventh-round pick to the Raiders.

He played 11 games that season, finishing with 25 catches for 362 yards and three touchdowns before retiring after the Seahawks’ playoff appearance.
