The boxing world is mourning the loss of Josué David Hernández, a 20-year-old rising talent whose life was cut short after a violent machete attack in Mexico.

According to YardBarker, Hernández was killed while stepping in to protect his sister during a domestic dispute, according to local authorities.

Mexico’s Fiscalía General del Estado de San Luis Potosí confirmed that an investigation is underway and that a suspect has been identified. Officials say the alleged attacker—reported to be the partner of Hernández’s sister—fled the scene and remains at large. A manhunt is ongoing.

Authorities say the incident unfolded when Hernández intervened during a violent altercation at a family residence. While attempting to shield his sister, the young boxer was allegedly attacked with a machete. He sustained multiple severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Hernández had been on the cusp of a professional breakthrough. After beginning boxing at age 15, he built a strong amateur résumé, competing in regional tournaments and earning several titles. His rapid development and time sparring with elite fighters had positioned him as a promising prospect, with plans to make his professional debut next year.

The news has sent shockwaves through Mexico’s boxing community, where Hernández was widely viewed as an emerging force. Tributes have poured in from trainers, teammates, and fellow fighters who had followed his ascent.

Among the most emotional messages came from his trainer, former world title contender Titan Rodriguez, who shared a heartfelt tribute on social media.

“Today, I woke up to the devastating and heartbreaking news that you are no longer here,” Rodriguez wrote.

He described Hernández as a close friend and training partner, adding, “So many dreams to fulfill… A part of my heart goes with you.” Rodriguez said he plans to honor Hernández by continuing to work toward the goals they discussed.
