The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has opened a formal review into the death of Isaac Johnson, a 31-year-old MMA athlete who died after collapsing during a bout in Chicago.

In a statement, the agency extended condolences to Johnson’s family and confirmed it is “thoroughly reviewing the circumstances” surrounding his amateur Muay Thai match at Cicero Stadium.

Johnson was competing at the Matador Fighter Challenge on Friday, November 21, when the incident occurred.

According to reports from NBC 5 Chicago and Fox 5 Washington, D.C., the fighter went down during the third and final round of his matchup against Mario Aleksandrovski. Event staff immediately called for medical assistance at 8:38 p.m., and Johnson was transported to Loyola University Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m.

This was Johnson’s first Thai boxing appearance, though he had a background in MMA. Promoter Joe Goytia, who organized the event, told Fox 5 that Johnson had passed all required state medical checks prior to stepping into the ring.

On Facebook, Goytia addressed the loss directly, writing, “This is a post I hoped to never make. Last night, one of the fighters in our event, Isaac Johnson, collapsed towards the end of his fight… I was then informed at around 1:30 a.m. this morning that he didn't make it.”

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that an autopsy has been scheduled to determine Johnson’s exact cause and manner of death.

The Matador Fighter Challenge describes itself as a high-intensity showcase for local fighters across MMA and Thai disciplines, billing the matches as “action-packed showdowns” for rising competitors. Johnson’s unexpected collapse has now placed a spotlight on safety protocols surrounding amateur combat sports events in Illinois.

For now, the IDFPR’s investigation remains active, with officials noting that they are “aware of the events” and will assess the full sequence of what happened inside Cicero Stadium that night.
