Just weeks after some MMA fans floated the idea that Alex Pereira could cement himself as the greatest fighter in UFC history, that conversation has taken a dramatic turn.

Pereira's bid for a third UFC title in a third weight class ended in brutal fashion at UFC Freedom 250, where Ciryl Gane stopped the Brazilian star in the second round to reclaim the interim heavyweight championship. The loss immediately sparked reactions across the combat sports world, including one from retired heavyweight king Jon Jones, who appeared more than happy to remind fans where he stands in the GOAT debate.

According to Bleacher Report, Jones wasted little time celebrating Gane's victory. Posting shortly after the White House co-main event, the former two-division champion congratulated the French heavyweight while subtly reasserting his own legacy. "Congratulations to the new heavyweight champion Gane," Jones wrote. "You looked great out there tonight." He ended the message with a goat emoji, a not-so-subtle nod to his long-running claim as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time.

Before stepping into the Octagon against Gane, Pereira was already facing serious allegations stemming from a newly publicized domestic violence case in Miami. Court filings reviewed by CBC News include accusations from former partner Merle Christine, who alleges the UFC star engaged in assault, stalking, coercive sexual behavior, and forcible confinement during their relationship.

Pereira has denied all allegations.

Christine said she sought legal protection so Pereira "cannot contact me anymore, he cannot speak about me anymore, and he cannot instrumentalize his fans anymore."

She also alleged that his behavior changed after she relocated to the United States to be with him. "The moment I entered his door, his behavior changed," she told CBC.

Pereira, speaking during a January deposition, denied assaulting Christine and disputed claims that he prevented her from leaving. "The door was open. She could have left whenever she wanted," he testified.

The Miami-Dade case is not the only allegation Pereira has faced. Another woman, Meredith Brown, publicly accused him of sexual assault in 2024 following an encounter after a UFC event in New Jersey. Pereira denied those claims as well, maintaining the encounter was consensual.

Court records also revealed that Pereira spent 18 days in a Brazilian jail more than a decade ago following an incident involving his then-wife, though he has denied assaulting her and described the matter as a misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, Jones' reaction wasn't the only one making waves after Gane's victory. Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou also weighed in, posting, "Congratulations Bon Gamin for the wonderful performance. Sincerely, LHC," referring to himself as the "Lineal Heavyweight Champion."
